The name of the village comes from the once valuable commodity of salt. It was once that is says it was a "House for storing of salt" and the Domesday Book of 1086 describes it as so.

Salthouse Marshes
66 hectares of coastal grazing marsh and saline lagoons.
The marshes are of international importance for wildlife, particularly birds.
